Lantern

Two paper festival lanterns, my first soldering iron, and a slow slide from nicer lights to designing a real circuit board.

The lantern's orange 3D-printed enclosure on a blue work mat, USB-C port on the near end, LED power and data wires running out to JST connectors.

The build, start to finish

  1. Addressable LED strands glowing green and cyan in a dim room, wired to a small microcontroller on a breadboard.

    11 July 2026Chapter 1

All I wanted was nicer lights

Two paper festival lanterns came with small ugly lights you turn on by hand. Replacing them turned into my first physical electronics project, and somehow ended with a circuit board at a factory.

Notes from the bench

  1. A round paper lantern shaped like Boo, the shy ghost from Super Mario, glowing in a dark room, lit from within by colored addressable LEDs.Video

    5 August 2026

I didn't draw a face on anything. We bought this one because it already looked like a Boo from Mario. I just gave the little ghost a set of programmable LEDs, so now it glows however I tell it to. #electronics

  2. Addressable LED strands glowing green and cyan in a dim room, wired to a small microcontroller on a breadboard.

    29 July 2026

First light. I'd soldered hobby kits before, but never anything that was my own idea, with no instructions telling me which leg goes in which hole. These did exactly what I told them to.

  3. A short vertical clip of one of the living room lanterns: a look from outside first, then a closer look inside where the addressable LEDs sit.Video

One of the living room lanterns. A look from outside first, then a peek inside at where the addressable LEDs live.

  4. A small hand-soldered green protoboard sits on a blue silicone soldering mat. A black 3-pin connector with red, white, and black wires is soldered to one end, feeding an addressable LED strip, with a separate red-and-black power lead. Around it are spools of green and yellow hookup wire, flush cutters, and pliers.

    8 July 2026

My first soldering outside a hobby kit: no instructions, just an idea and a connector that needed to be on this board. A few of the joints are ugly. They all held when I tugged on them.

  5. A breadboard on a black plastic mount resting on a couch. A red Arduino Uno (SparkFun RedBoard) at the top is wired by blue, yellow, red and black jumper wires down to a white breadboard holding a small black Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32, a USB-C cable, and a few loose resistors. An in-progress test of the lantern's LED controller.

    3 July 2026

Testing the lantern guts on the couch, because that's where the lanterns are going to live. A little XIAO chip learning to push a whole strip of addressable LEDs around.
