I almost charged for it
My first instinct was a subscription fee. Then I showed it around, and every time I pictured a paywall in front of it the fun drained out.
When I started, my brain did the thing every brain on the internet does now. Build it, put a subscription on it, charge a few bucks a month, passive income, blah blah blah. The whole monetization trap, queued up before the thing even worked.
Then I showed it around, and two things landed at once. One, the audience for a deep, weird map of video game history is super-nerds. Lovingly meant, and a narrow crowd. Two, and this is the one that actually decided it, every time I pictured a paywall sitting in front of it, the fun kind of drained out of the project for me.
So I dropped it. The map is open to anybody who shows up. No wall in front of the good part, nothing to upgrade to. If I remember right, everything is open, which is at least where I think I left it.
Maybe someday there is a version of this that pays for itself. I make things because the making is the fun part, and I could feel the money plans squeezing that out.
