Built in the cracks
This didn't get built with tidy daily discipline. It got built in bursts, around a job and a long stretch of being sick, so I picked tools that could survive me disappearing for two weeks.
From the outside this looks like a few focused weeks. The commit history tells on me: one commit one day, nothing the next, then a couple, then three dozen in a single afternoon.
It got built around a full-time job at a game studio, and through a long stretch of being sick. The hours I had, not the hours I wanted. The biggest single day was Christmas, which sounds worse than it was. My kid was with his mom that day, so I played and hyperfocused and built something.
For a long time I read those gaps as me being lazy. I don’t really think that anymore. They are just what it looks like when the time is stolen.
The practical part, and the only bit of this that might be useful to anybody else, is that I picked every tool with one question in mind. Can this survive two weeks of me not touching it? Because two weeks of me not touching it was a guarantee. So the data pipeline runs itself. The site deploys without me babysitting it. Nothing important is waiting on me showing up tomorrow.
I am not a disciplined guy. I had a thing I kept coming back to, and I built it so it could sit there while I was gone.
